What: SB 141, Create an Indigenous People’s Day

Position: SUPPORT

When: Wednesday, February 8th @ 3 PM

Where: Senate Education and Cultural Resources Committee – Room 422 – Sign up to testify or submit written comment

Talking Points:

  • By changing Columbus day to Indigenous People’s Day, we can take an important step to acknowledge the effects of the colonization of the Americas on America’s first people; and honor the considerable contributions the people of indigenous nations have given to us

  • Changing the name of the holiday will allow us to recognize and celebrate Indigenous peoples’ resilience and strength as well as the immeasurable positive impact that they have made on every aspect of Montana; instead of celebrating somebody who actually caused genocide.

  • Honoring a man who had enabled colonization and forced assimilation of Native Americans is not Montana values
