HB 280, Long-term property tax relief

What: HB 280, Long-term property tax relief

Position: Support

When: The House will vote on this sometime this week or next. While we wait for the schedule to be posted, please contact Representatives.

Action: Reach out to your State House Representative to support on the floor. Look up and get contact info for your representative here.

Talking Points:

  • Working Montanans and seniors are being priced out of their homes and community because of rising property taxes. HB 280 provides long-term relief.
  • The Department of Revenue estimates that property values are expected to rise 43% next year — we need meaningful, long time relief now. (A one-time payment doesn’t solve the problem, or prevent it from getting worse next year)
  • HB 280 caps household property tax burden at a percent of household income. If property taxes are above the threshold, a tax credit is issued for the difference. This provides stability and predictability for families
