You talk to everyone on the block, gather signatures on a petition, and go to your city council meeting to make your case. That’s grassroots organizing.
It’s basically people coming together, at a local level, to make change happen. It’s about building power from the ground up, not waiting for politicians or big organizations to fix things. It can involve anything from talking to your neighbors, organizing meetings, signing petitions, protesting, contacting elected officials, or even running for office yourself.
Grassroots organizing is often about issues that directly affect a community, like better schools, cleaner parks, or safer streets. It’s about regular people using their voices and working together to make a difference where they live. It doesn’t require special skills or connections – just a willingness to get involved and make your voice heard.

For Yellowstone County Democrats, it starts at the precinct level. In Montana, voter precincts are the smallest geographic units for conducting elections. Under the state constitution, precinct committee men and women roles (there are one each for each precinct) are meant to assist with the voting process. In practice, it means building ongoing relationships with the voters in your precinct district.
The ripple effect of making change at this level makes a big impact at higher levels in government. For this reason, Yellowstone Democrats are invested in supporting grassroots, precinct level leaders to bring about positive change in Montana communities.
