House Bill 153 to remove energy drinks from SNAP.

karjala-snap-energy-drinksRep Jessica Karjala reports from the House Human Services committee that Rep Vince Ricci from Laurel believes that people on SNAP (commonly known as food stamps) should not be able to use the benefits to purchase energy drinks.

Here is the USDA’s list of what is eligible to be purchased under the SNAP program.  https://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/eligible-food-items

One might note that the SNAP program is administered under the Department of Agriculture because it has two reasons for existing, helping people to eat better and improving the market for agricultural products.  Energy drinks do include sugar which is likely produced from corn or sugar beets.
